Usage of an electronic cigarette

Though theoretically, electronic cigarettes are a great option for the traditional cigarettes, not enough research has been done on the long term effects of these cigarettes. Though most of these cigarettes contain nicotine solutions but non nicotine solutions can also be used in these. There is no combustion in these cigarettes and they give the same sensation to the smoker as that given by a tobacco cigarette.

Most of these are long-shaped tubes but can be customized to any shape. However, most of these are reusable and come with refillable cartridges. Some disposable electronic cigarette brands are also available.

There are 3 basic parts of any electronic cigarette kit-

1. A power source- it can be a battery or a wire connected to a USB port.
2. A heating element called as the electronic cigarette atomizer.
3. A cartridge containing the e-cigarette liquid storage material. Some cigarettes may have both, the cartridge and the atomizer integrated into one piece called as the cartomizer.

The liquid is held by the cartridge. Whenever the cartridge is inserted into the electronic cigarette case, the cartridge liquid makes contact with the atomizer’s bridge. It absorbs the liquid into the atomizer’s steel mesh reservoir. The liquid resides there till the user puffs on the cigarette.

When the user puffs on the electronic cigarette, the liquid is pulled from the atomizer to the ceramic atomizer pot. The atomizer pot contains an aromatic Polyimide wick, which absorbs the liquid. Simultaneously, the device heats up the coil around the wick. The heat produced converts the liquid in the wick to vapors. This vapor is puffed by the user.

There is also a LED at the end of the cigarette that indicates when the vaporizer is in use. Both, the atomizer and the LED are controlled by a microprocessor. Whenever the cigarette is used, a sensor detects use and activates the microprocessor.
